In October 2009, Favreau confirmed to MTV that he will not be directing The Avengers. In April 2010, Stan Lee and Avi Arad confirmed that Joss Whedon will direct the film.[8] Robert Downey, Jr. and Don Cheadle are set to reprise their roles as Iron Man and War Machine, respectively. Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston will reprise their roles from the upcoming Thor as Thor and Loki as well. Samuel L. Jackson signed on to play Nick Fury as part of an unprecedented deal with Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures for nine pictures, including The Avengers and its respective sequels.Scarlett Johansson, playing the Iron Man 2 role of Black Widow, will be in the film.Chris Evans will reprise his role as Captain America from the forthcoming film Captain America: The First Avenger. Clark Gregg will also reprise his role as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson. In June 2010, reports surfaced that Jeremy Renner was in final negotiations to play Hawkeye in the upcoming film.
Edward Norton stated in an interview with MTV that he would like to appear in The Avengers and that he would be happy to see The Hulk as the villain.Lou Ferrigno, who voiced Hulk in 2008's The Incredible Hulk, stated that he would be involved in the film. In a January 26, 2010 interview with SFX, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed that the Hulk will appear in The Avengers. In July 2010, HitFix reported that Edward Norton would not be returning as Bruce Banner in the film, and the studio would cast an unknown to play the character. The following day Kevin Fiege confirmed the report, though saying that a "name actor" would be replacing him rather than an unknown.
At the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con International Joss Whedon confirmed that he is indeed writing and directing the film and that Jeremy Renner would play Hawkeye. It was also reported at the convention that Mark Ruffalo would replace Edward Norton as Bruce Banner in a deal reached by Brillstein Entertainment Partners with Marvel.
