Thundercat - Apocalypse [2013] [Album]



Thundercat is Stephen Bruner, a Los Angeles-based musician whose involvement in the city's musical landscape transcends the beat scene that's proliferated over the last few years. As a sought-after bassist, he's played with everyone from Erykah Badu to Snoop Dogg to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. But his solo project slots nicely into the heady, funky milieu of Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder label, which also released Thundercat's debut The Golden Age Of Apocalypse. FlyLo has signed on as "executive producer" for Apocalypse, and Bruner describes his involvement as providing the record with "a different perspective and mold." Thundercat's signature harmonies and bass riffs will once again feature prominently, and FlyLo guests across the album.

Silver Wilkinson will be Stephen James Wilkinson's seventh full-length, arriving two years after his most recent album, Mind Bokeh. The sounds of the album were in part inspired by the outdoors—first single "À tout à l'heure" was recorded in Wilkinson's back garden and samples a plastic watering can and garden shears, while "Dye The Water Green" features the sound of rain falling on the tin roof of the producer's shed.

"If there was a preconceived idea before this album started coming together, it was a fairly vague one: to focus more on an organic and live sound and to record more guitar and other live instrumentation," Wilkinson explains. "However, I'm no purist, so I don't restrain myself from taking stylistic diversions, to do so might be to dispose of the unplanned. As a result this album feels to me as eclectic as my previous two albums."
