Photographer of the Year 2006
Summer's here and once again it's time to dust off your camera and put your skills to the test in our annual photography competition.
We'd like you to send in your photos on the themes listed in the box below.
Please interpret the brief as widely as you can - don't just think of the obvious.
Remember we are looking for compelling photos that will grab our attention.
Current assignment
This year the deadlines are closer together so make sure you get your pictures in on time, you can enter up to four images per category.
Each theme and its corresponding deadline date are listed in the box to the right.
Voting
Following the closing date for each theme the twelve best pictures will be selected by our picture desk and displayed in a picture gallery a week later. You will then have 24 hours in which to vote for your favourite.
The two photos that get the most votes will go forward to the final when you will be able to decide who is awarded the title of BBC News website Photographer of the Year 2006.
The prizes
Overall winner chosen by you: The chance to shoot a photographic story of your choice which will then be displayed on the BBC News website. We will contribute up to £400 towards the cost of the project.
In addition there will be an extra prize made to the photographer whose image catches our eye.
How to submit a picture
So please get out there and start snapping, then send your pictures to us at:

Please remember to put "Photographer of the Year" and the theme you are entering in the subject heading of your e-mail.
Don't forget to include your name and some background information as to what the image is about.
Submissions must be in digital form; ideally Jpegs with a height or width limit of up to 800 pixels.

Terms of use
Pictures submitted and marked as entries to "Photographer of the Year" will only be used in conjunction with the competition and any associated promotion. All entries that are not selected will be deleted.
In accordance with section 9 of the BBC's Terms of use you agree to grant to the BBC a non-exclusive licence to publish and use your photographs for non-commercial purposes. Copyright will however remain with the photographer.
The BBC cannot guarantee that all pictures and will be used and we reserve the right to edit your comments.
Your entry must be entirely your own original work, not defame anybody nor breach any copyright.
The judges' decision will be final and no correspondence can be entered into. If the readers' vote results in a tie the judges shall have the casting vote.
Employees of BBC Worldwide, the BBC, and their immediate families are not eligible to enter. Entrants must be aged 16 or over on 18 July 2006.
The BBC reserves the right to cancel this competition at any stage, if deemed necessary in its opinion, and if circumstances arise outside its control.
By entering, entrants will be deemed to have agreed to be bound by these rules.
These rules are governed by the laws of England and Wales.
