China has deployed fighter jets to disputed Woody Island in the latest development surrounding the disputed South China Sea Islands, according to a media report. The move comes amid heightened tensions in the area.
US intelligence spotted “under ten” jets near Woody Island, also known as Yongxing Island, an American official told Fox News.
The dispatched jets reportedly include China’s Shenyang J-11s (“Flanker”) and Xian JH-7s (“Flounder”). The sightings date back to a few days ago.
Fox News also reported last week that China had sent two batteries of HQ-9 surface-to-air missiles to the same island.

US Defense Secretary Ash Carter has warned China against militarizing the disputed island chain in the South China Sea threatening “specific consequences” that could follow should Beijing not wind down its activities in the region.
Following China’s deployment of surface-to-air missile systems on Woody Island last month, in addition to military aircraft, Carter during a speech at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco stated that “China must not pursue militarization in the South China Sea.”

Confirmed by the Navy Times, the stand-off has been heating up on both sides. After news in February that the Chinese deployed an advanced surface-to-air missile battery to the Paracel Islands, U.S. Pacific Command head Adm. Harry Harris told lawmakers that China was militarizing the South China Sea.
